Overview

The mission of educational leadership seems to have shifted from cultural growth to standardized testing. The result: a narrow curriculum. This book suggests that the time has come for educational leaders to re-evaluate their mission and redirect their schools to a broader curriculum emphasizing the moral nature of learning. The author also suggests activities that can encourage leaders to change their methods. Leadership requirements, principles, characteristics, skills, climate and performance standards are set out in six chapters, two appendices provide additional information, and a third lists web resources available through the Internet. A glossary, notes, bibliography, and index complete the work.

Synopsis

Retired since 2001, Hester taught at the university level for ten years and in public schools for ten years, and was a public school administrator for 17 years. He argues against the overemphasis on testing of the past two decades, believing that ethical conduct accompanied by effective leadership practices is the key to transforming schools. Hester first discusses the need for ethical and servant leadership, and then examines five areas of leadership —principles, characteristics, skills, climate, and performance standards—with suggested activities for leadership development.
