The EU is now a major player in globalization due to its economic power and position in trade relations. The enlargement has led to a higher IR profile for the EU and EU external diplomacy has been deeply affected by the events surrounding 9/11. At the same time economic development and transition politics have also transformed regional and international relations among the Asian states over the past two decades.
