Synopsis

Presents information about the location, topography, climate, population, industry, language, and currency of each of the European countries.

Children's Literature

Forty influential nations are located on the second smallest continent of Europe. Some of these countries have just become independent within the past decade, such as Serbia, Macedonia, Moldova, and Slovakia. A brief history, a map, the flag, and some statistics are included in each thumbnail sketch of the countries. Even tiny nations nestled within the larger ones, such as Andorra, Monaco, and Vatican City, are included. Along with descriptions, many photographs are featured, making this an informative and welcoming resource. Some nations have colorful histories, others have unique geography, while others impact the world with natural resources or products. Maps are detailed and up-to-date, and an index and glossary make this an easy-to-use resource. As part of "The World in Maps" series, this would be an excellent choice for the home or classroom. 2000, Lerner Publications. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Laura Hummel
