Synopsis

While trying to earn money by shoveling snow so she can buy her mother a Christmas present, Carrie comes up with an idea for just the right gift. Includes soup recipes.

Children's Literature

It is a very snowy and cold day in the city. Carrie is searching for some snow shoveling jobs around her neighborhood to earn extra money to buy a birthday gift for her mother. As she walks from home to home and from apartment to apartment, the delicious smells of homemade soup happily distract her. Carrie enjoys sampling many of the soups and realizes that she has discovered the perfect birthday present for her mother--a collection of neighborhood soup recipes. This is a lovely illustrated book that is better suited for the cook enthusiast than a young reader. The illustrator has done a terrific job capturing Carrie's culturally diverse neighborhood and has compiled a multicultural cookbook. However, the story itself fails to entertain and is a mere vehicle to introduce the soup recipes. 2000, Carolrhoda Books Inc., Ages 8 up, $15.95. Reviewer: Andrea Sears Andrews—Children's Literature
