Children's Literature
An addition to the "Spotlights" series, this title introduces the Viking world. Each of the eighteen chapters is devoted to an aspect of this society including "Farms and Farmers," "War and Conquest," "Home Life" and more. The introduction offers a brief overview of the Vikings and demonstrates how each chapter should be read by providing a graphic explaining the page's components. The writing style is factual; the sentence structure is short and concise. The pages are divided into two sections: the upper two-thirds consists of an informational paragraph on the topic with an appropriate dominant illustration, including several maps; the bottom third consists of a series of small visuals along with brief captions that provide information about relevant sub-topics. Seven illustrators contributed, yet the drawing styles are compatible and integrate well. There is a glossary with cross-references and an extensive index. The glossary terms are not highlighted, and this may be due to the brevity of text on the main pages. A useful book for any elementary school library that packs in a lot of information at an affordable price.
