VOYA
Down Syndrome (DS), a genetic condition that causes mental retardation as well as several potentially serious medical problems, affects 250,000 Americans and millions more worldwide. Since DS was formally identified in the 1860s by Dr. John L. Down, modern research and education have made tremendous strides in improving the quality of life and the lifespan of people born with the disorder. Tocci and Bowman-Kruhm cover similar territory in their books. Bowman-Kruhm's entry in The Need to Know Library is geared toward middle school students, whereas Tocci targets the junior and senior high school grades. They both offer clear, balanced, reassuring, age-appropriate explanations of all aspects of DS, from the myriad health concerns to social, developmental, and behavioral issues. They support their findings and conclusions with summaries of the latest research, treatments, resources, and opportunities now available to those whose lives are touched by DS. Both authors' well-researched texts provide a great service to their reading audiences, dispelling the countless frightening myths often associated with DS while maintaining an attitude of caring acceptance of those who have the disorder. Dozens of positive photographs and uplifting anecdotes support their premise that Down Syndrome is a challenge, not a disaster. These titles are distinguished primarily by reading level, with Tocci's work offering considerably more detail on the research and health implications covered in each book. These highly recommended books would be of great benefit to children with family members, classmates, and neighbors with Down Syndrome.
