Editorials

Reviewer: Diane M Tomasic, EdD, RN(Slippery Rock University )
Description: This is the second edition of a book providing a basic understanding of research methods and how to incorporate evidence into practice. An access code for an online component is included.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide students with the knowledge they need to develop an evidence-based practice. This is a worthwhile goal, as nurses need to be able to read research reports and to decide whether and how to use the evidence in clinical decision making.
Audience: The target audience is nursing students being introduced to research methods and to how to incorporate the evidence into practice. The author is an evidence-base practice consultant.
Features: Part I of the book describes systematic reviews and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines in addition to the major types of research, with examples of each. Part II presents the steps of the evidence-based practice impact model which is used to achieve an evidence-based practice. Several appendixes present terms used to describe scientific evidence, the process for producing an evidence-based clinical practice guideline, an appraisal of a clinical practice guideline's recommendation, appraisal of conclusions of an integrative research review, appraisal of a quantitative study, and a completed findings table. An additional appendix on the appraisal of a qualitative study would have been helpful. The online component for students provides study guides, research articles, sample research papers, animated flashcards, crossword puzzles, and an interactive glossary.
Assessment: This book should be useful to the target audience. Being able to incorporate research into practice is a must for today's nurses and this book provides basic knowledge for this process.
