Overview

This volume provides us with the first detailed view of the functioning of the Middle Elamite Empire outside Susiana. The excavation encompassed a segment of a larger building that must have served as a focus for the servants of the Elamite state in Anshan. Even though the function of the excavated area changed over timeβ€”from monumental building (level IV), to ceramic production area (level IIIB), to domestic structure (level IIIA)β€”the strong cultural ties to the lowlands continued until level IIIA was abandoned.

Booknews

Reports on the excavation of a building in southwestern Iran at a site only recently identified as the Anshen that Elamite kings claimed to rule along with Susa during the last years of the second millennium B.C. Describes the stratigraphy, architecture and room function, the ceramic assemblage, small finds from the various levels, and the later history of the site. Appendices consider the Malyan pottery coding key, lithic clusters, paleobotany, and optical mineralogy. Nearly half of the volume is comprised of black-and-white drawings and photographs. Includes a Persian summary. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
