Overview

There is no question we are harming our planet-grasslands in Somalia have dried up, unable to sustain agriculture; ice floes are thinning and breaking up in the north because of global warming; life-sustaining Brazilian rainforests are being clear-cut and burned at an alarming rate. Exceptional Women Environmentalists profiles ten advocates for the earth-passionate women who work tirelessly on behalf of those who have no voice. From Jane Goodall, famed primate researcher and advocate, to "Amazonian Legend" Sharon Beder, activist for the Brazilian rainforest and its people, Exceptional Women Environmentalists shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things.

Synopsis

Global warming. Pollution. Endangered and extinct animals. There is no question we are doing harm to the earth - grasslands in Somalia have dried up, unable to sustain agriculture; ice floes are thinning and breaking up in the North; life-sustaining wetlands are disappearing.

Exceptional Women Environmentalists profiles ten advocates for the earth and shows how ordinary people can do extraordinary things. From Rachel Carson, the woman who started the modern environmental movement, to Severn Cullis-Suzuki, an environmental activist since before she was thirteen years old, and Marina Silva, who fights to keep the Brazilian rainforest from vanishing, these are all passionate women who work tirelessly on behalf of those who have no voice. Their inspiring work is making a vital difference for our planet.

Children's Literature

AGERANGE: Ages 12 to 18.

Short biographies tell of the work of ten women environmentalists. It credits Rachel Carson with beginning the movement. Jane Goodall's work with chimpanzees, Dai Qing's debates in China over the Three Gorges Dam, Fatima Jibrell's introduction of a Sun Fire Cooker in Somalia, and Sheila Watt-Cloutier's work to publicize the needs of the Inuit in the Arctic during global warming and poisoning of the ocean are all part of the movement. Vandana Shiva in India educates for biodiversity, Sharon Beder tackles the pollution of the waters around Australia and the manipulation of global corporations, and Marina Silva tries to save the rain forests of Brazil even though she is frequently ill from heavy metal poisoning from the drinking water. Severn Cullis-Suzuki has worked with the First Nations people of Canada and began the Environmental Children's Organization (ECO) which connects young people around the world. Olya Melenhas made progress in saving wetlands in the Ukraine. She feels being young helps move people. First published in Canada, this is one of "The Women's Hall of Fame" series. A glossary is included, along with a list of resources for further information on each of the subjects. This book gives young women many ideas for action and ways to help preserve our planet. Let us hope that they do it. Reviewer: Carlee Hallman
