Overview

Exhibiting Gender examiners the ways in which women's art and representations of women are collected and presented in museums and art galleries today. It presents readers with full color reproductions of pairs of unidentified works, one by a man and one by a woman, and asks, "Can you tell which is the woman's work?" Readers are asked to examine their own expectations of, and preconceptions about, art by women, and the ways in which women are represented n art; the text then discusses those subjects and other related issues. Developed from an innovative exhibition at the Whirworth Art Gallery in 1992, the book offers readers a way of studying and thinking about individual works which builds on their own responses to the images.
