Following the quelling of the Parisian revolution of 1870-1871, the conservative government of the Third Republic declared the perpetrators of the revolution, the Communards, were sufferers of original sin and atavistic degeneration. As this obviously aligned them with the savage natives of the South Pacific, the government exiled some 4,500 of the revolutionaries to the colony of New Caledonia, in Melanesia, with hopes that the truths of nature would eventually grant them a natural sense of morality. This book explores the interaction between the "political savages" and the "natural savages" (the Melanesian Kanak), and how it eventually led to an era, not of domination, but recognition, of native peoples in French political theory.
