Originally published in French in 1921 (De l'explications dans les sciences, Editions Payot), this tour de force has been translated (by Mary-Alice and David A. Spifle) and briefly introduced, making available in English a major contribution to the history of ideas by a prodigious scholar who was trained in chemistry and became a major figure among French scholars interested in questions of philosophy. Noteworthy is the attention given to Hegel, whose ideas are discussed at greater length (and somewhat mercilessly) than those of other philosophers. Indexed by name only. Annotation c.
