Children's Literature

The exploration of South America was swift and brutal. Spain and Portugal were both desperate to establish and maintain a foothold in the New World throughout the sixteenth century. To that end, each sent several expeditions to search for gold and silver as well as to maintain a foothold on the continent. Ironically enough, several of the explorers worked for both nations at different times in their lives. The authors provide brief biographies on several of the explorers who altered the cultural landscape of South America, from Amerigo Vespucci to Francis Drake. The biographies of the explorers are an adequate introduction to those men, but the authors fail to offer more than a cursory look at the effect the exploration and early colonization had on the native people of South America. Full color illustrations, historical images, and full-color maps are included throughout. Words in bold throughout the text are defined in the glossary at the end of the text. Also included are an index, additional sources to consult, and a timeline of the events described. Part of the "Exploring the Americas" series. 2004, Raintree, Ages 8 to 12.
