Synopsis

Examines extinct species, including prehistoric man, and discusses why extinction happens, as well as how information is gathered on species that existed before humans evolved. ...

School Library Journal

Gr 3-5-This British import examines the causes and impact of the extinction of a variety of plant and animal species. The first three volumes present a discussion of the many potential causes of extinction, consider prehistoric animal life, explain how information about that period can be obtained, and describe fossil hunting both as it is done by professional paleontologists and by amateurs. Succeeding volumes focus on a specific section of the animal kingdom or on plants. In the final volume, the discussion becomes a geographic one, and each part of the world is highlighted with respect to the specific environmental problems of the past and present and possible future threats. The clearly written text is presented on topical spreads, and the information is solid as well as interesting. Not only are extinct animals and plants examined, but similar, surviving species, descendants, and endangered relatives are also described. Of particular interest throughout the set are the discussions of how scientists have learned what they know. Unfortunately, none of the information is documented. In addition, the quality of the illustrations varies tremendously; some enhance and expand on the text; a significant number are poorly executed. The table of contents in each volume lists the section headings and offers short descriptions for each spread. Each volume has its own short glossary and a set index. Despite flaws, this visual set is sure to draw budding scientists to a variety of disciplines. Not an essential purchase, but worthy of consideration.-Linda Greengrass, Bank Street College Library, New York City Copyright 2003 Cahners Business Information.
