Overview

Jay is determined to make his name by climbing a tough rock face known as "The Wall" solo. No partner, no ropes, no equipment. Little does Jay suspect that it's his own life that will one day hang in the balance. This exciting rock-climbing adventure looks at the desire to break barriers and the questionable role of the media in the dangerous pursuits of extreme sports.

Children's Literature

Sixteen-year-old Jay has grown up close to “The Wall”, a sheer rock mountain that dominates one edge of his small Canadian town. He has climbed the huge rock many times with his family and friends using the appropriate equipment, but he has a secret goal that he has not shared with anyone. Jay wants to climb The Wall solo, with no aids of any kind. He has trained well and has a good chance of succeeding. In the meantime, his friend Brad has announced his intention to make a dangerous ski jump. He has not done the necessary training, and Jay attempts to persuade his friend to abandon this notion. However, Brad is determined to “prove himself” to some of his other friends and refuses to listen. It seems likely that both boys will proceed with the objectives they have set for themselves. The results could be disastrous. This fast-paced story of courage and friendship will likely appeal to middle school readers. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
