Children's Literature - Susie Wilde

The well-known Eyewitness series publishes nonfiction volumes centered on one subject. Each is spectacular in both photography and authentic, accurate information. Costume, one of the titles, is recommended for ages ten and up, but a younger reader will certainly enjoy the photographs and can glean some information. Other titles in the series include Boat, Film, and Horse.

Gr 2-8-- A fascinating historical overview of clothing. True to the series format, this one blends closeup, full-color photographs of period clothing and accessories with brief snippets of text that explain the item's significance and purpose. The impact of changing fashion is made dramatic by the inclusion of new photos of models wearing theatrical recreations of historic costumes. Some of the eye-catching two-page spreads show the elaborate underpinnings of mid-19th century women's clothing, bridal garb through the years, swimwear, hats, children's attire, etc. Other books on the subject exist, but few have this title's visual appeal and browsability. Although it lacks a global view, concentrating instead on European trends, it should add significantly to an understanding of what people wore and why. --Denise Anton Wright, Illinois State University, Normal
