Children's Literature
The DK group has put together a very interesting kit, "First Activity Pack," about minerals and their identification targeted to children in the elementary grades. The finder's guide introduces the types of minerals/rocks and kids are encouraged to place a gold star (included in book) to mark the ones they actually find. The kit includes some real, semiprecious stones to study with the enclosed magnifying glass and tweezers. A large and colorful poster displaying many samples and information about them would look great in an aspiring geologist's room. The four project cards give more information about different rock and mineral categories and each has a simple experiment to try.
