Children's Literature
Forty activities are presented to help kids understand fractions. First, we learn the appropriate vocabulary. The projects start out by simply folding and cutting a piece of paper in half, in a few different ways. Then peanut butter sandwiches are divided up. Strips of paper are divided into segments to practice reducing equivalent fractions. Playing cards, dominos, poker chips and paper plates are recruited in this effort to understand adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions. This seems to be more of a teachers guide than something a student would use on his own, even though it is generally kid friendly in design and illustrations. Anyone who completes even part of these exercises will have a good command of fractions. 2001, John Wiley & Sons, $12.95. Ages 7 to 12. Reviewer: Kristin Harris
