Overview

Jessie McIntyre has a perfect life in her new home town. She's going out with a great guy, and she's got lots of friends. She can hardly wait for her second season playing hockey with the Estevan Xtreme in a brand new girls league. But after Jessie makes a stupid decision at a high school party, Mark's not talking to her anymore. Then the Xtreme loses some key players, and she's not looking forward to hockey season either. To make things worse, high school is a whole lot more complicated than junior high ever was. Jessie could seriously use some GPS to help navigate the school cafeteria and the dressing room. Will she find a way to salvage her second hockey season and win back her boyfriend?

"Ulrich gives young readers a superb novel with something to pique every interest....The personal issues among the young women on the hockey team, as well as with their boyfriends and parents, provide insights into the teen world of today...Teenage girls will enjoy the sports action of the novel as well as the personal intrigues and will quite likely meet themselves or their friends in its pages...Highly Recommended."

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer

Jessie is looking forward to her first year in high school. She loves hockey; she has good friends; and she has Mark, the perfect boyfriend. All of this changes when Jessie gets drunk at a party and makes out with another girl. The perpetrators record the incident and post it on Main Page. Mark is disgusted and breaks up with her. Jessie has constant conflicts with students at school and with her hockey teammates. Set in Canada, many of the terms and words used are unfamiliar and some spellings are confusing. References to school courses and structures are unclear, as are the number of characters who come and goβ€”to other high schools, colleges? Jessie tells the story in first person, present tense. Her tone reflects self-pity and has a whiny quality. Much of the text in this overlong book (352 pages) consists of play-by-play descriptions of hockey games. Avid hockey fans may stick it out to the end. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.
