Family Storytime: Twenty-Four Creative Programs for All Ages

Author Rob Reid has been a children's librarian for fourteen years and has entertained children for seventeen years, conducting up to 200 children's programs a year. His "family-tested" material is highly participative and works on multiple levels. Organized by theme, the twenty-four programs each run about thirty solid minutes and include songs, picture book suggestions, poems, and fingerplays. A "mix and match" section helps you customize new programs around the same theme.

Some themes are standard, while others are zany, such as "Mouthsounds" (about making sound effects) and "Altered Endings & Twisted Tales." For each of the 24 themes, Reid includes a combination of suggested books, crafts, felt or string stories, fingerplays, movement activities, poems, reader's theater scripts, riddles, songs, and videos. Each program outline is followed by lively annotations and performance suggestions. A final "Mix and Match" section includes alternatives for adapting programs to suit personal style. Reid even makes efforts to engage teenagers and older family members-mainly by enlisting them as performers. The discography and bibliography will help locate resources.
