One of the "Wilson Facts" series, this weighty reference work covers just about any sport you can imagine. It's the kind of book that librarians need to keep around to answer questions like "Has anyone ever won the Cy Young Award in both leagues?" (Yep; the first man to do it was Gaylord Perry, in 1972 and 1978.) It would also be a useful tool when staging a school or library sports trivia competition. Of course, it would also come in handy when settling a bet on, say, which baseball team was the first to win two consecutive American League pennants. (It was the Boston Red Sox, known at the time as the Boston Pilgrims, in 1903 and 1904.) 2001, The H.W. Wilson Company, $105.00. Ages 10 up. Reviewer: Donna FreedmanBooknews
A reference for fans, librarians, sportscasters, writers, and researchers, providing information on some 5,400 "firsts" in about 110 sports, from airplane racing to wrestling. Emphasis is given to sports most popular in the US, along with extensive coverage of all Olympic sports. For each sport, coverage is chronological, from earliest times to the highlights of the 2000 Olympics. Five indexes, by subject, year, month and day, personal name, and geographical location, make it easy to find answers to specific questions. The authors have written some 100 books, many of them reference works. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)Book Details
