Library Journal
The uncertain parameters of this literature have created problems for readers and librarians. The editor, noted for his guides to science fiction ( Anatomy of Wonder, LJ 11/1/76; 1987. 3d ed.), has covered over 1700 works of fiction and nonfiction. History and criticism, reference works, film and television, art, magazines, core collections, awards, and organizations are surveyed. Modern titles for children and young adults receive attention. Numerous works combining science fiction and fantasy are carefully delineated. The essays and annotated bibliographies, with their cross-referencing , expand the pioneering works of E.F. Bleiler, Guide to Supernatural Fiction ( LJ 6/1/83) and Supernatural Fiction Writers: Fantasy & Horror ( LJ 8/85). Frank Magill's Survey of Modern Fantasy Literature ( LJ 2/1/84. 5 vols.) does not cover the broad spectrum of topics. A rapidly expanding genre now has a convenient tool for collection development and evaluation.
