Synopsis

Dan does everything quickly, except when it is time to go to bed.

Susan Hepler - Children's Literature

In this gently humorous story told in 56 words, Dan is fast a real type-A character who is fast-moving, fast at sports, fast at eating, fast at reading, fast at making messes as he eats, at bicycling, and everything else. Everyone says "Slow down" but Dan just can't be bothered. In fact, the only time Dan can slow down is at bedtime, when his parents want him to hurry and then he says, "Fast is bad." Kids can identify with this brown-skinned boy who is happily busy in school, in the neighborhood, and at home, even if his teacher and his parents might wish he would slow down. Doty's rounded multicultural figures are fun, and speedy Dan, with his forward-slanting hairdo and little lines of motion all around his figure, seems ready to race off the page. "A Rookie Reader" book, Level B, aimed at the early stages of fluent reading. 2002, Children's Press,
