Ferdinand Magellan is credited with being the first mariner to circumnavigate the globe. His 16th Century voyage around the tip of South America, through the passage now known as the Straits of Magellan, opened a western trade route from Europe to Asia. This book is part of the beautifully produced "Great Explorers" series. Though it is written in a simple style that will be easily understood by elementary-school children, it is also rich in detail, conveying the drama and dangers of Magellan's adventure. Contemporaneous engravings and maps illustrate the text, and numerous sidebars present interesting details. The text also incorporates excerpts from the diaries of Antonio Pigafetta, an Italian nobleman who signed onto the voyage as a passenger. These accounts provide a telling window into the day-to-day life of Magellan and his crewmen. Suggested questions for further discussion follow the text, as do a glossary, index, and list of additional sources. 2004, World Almanac Library, Ages 9 to 12.β Barbara Carroll Roberts
