Children's Literature
As part of the "Mathematics in Action" series, Figuras (Shapes) concentrates on having fun with math and geometric shapes. Children learn not only shapes, but also how to create toy animals, paper jewelry, pencil holders and other crafts. Math skills they will develop include measurement, estimating, counting and making pairs. The directions are clear and easy to follow and the materials used are inexpensive and very obtainable. Illustrations are in bright colors, although it was surprising to see a French coin used as an example instead of one of Spanish origin. Other books in the series are Medidas (Measurements), Diseños (Designs), and Juegos (Games). A fluent understanding of Spanish is needed to use this book because there is no glossary or English translation provided. 2000, Two-Can Publishing, . Ages 9 to 12.
