About the Author, Belverd E. Needles

Belverd E. Needles, Jr. received BBA and MBA degrees from Texas Tech University and a PhD degree from the University of Illinois. He teaches financial accounting, managerial accounting, and auditing at DePaul University, where he is an internationally recognized expert in international accounting and education. He has published in leading journals and is the author or editor of more than 20 books and monographs. His Principles of Accounting text was translated into Russian and is now the leading textbook in Russia on Western accounting. Dr. Needles is active in many academic and professional organizations; he is the current Chair of the Board of Directors of the Illinois CPA Society and the immediate past president of the International Association for Accounting Education and Research (IAAER). Among his roles, Dr. Needles has served as the elected U.S. Representative to the European Accounting Association, Chair of the International Accounting Section of the American Accounting Association, Director of continuing education for the American Accounting Association, and President of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy. He served as chair of the Academic and Career Development Executive Committee and on the Information Technology Executive Committee of the American Institute of CPAs. He served as the United States representative on the Education Committee of the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) and a member of the Consultative Group of the International Accounting Standards Committee (IASC).Dr. Needles has received several professional and academic excellence awards, including the Distinguished Alumni Award from Texas Tech University, the Illinois CPA Society OutstandingEducator Award, the Joseph A. Marian Powers, Ph.D., is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Accounting at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Allen Center for Executive Education at Northwestern University. She has taught the beginning accounting course for more than twenty-five years on the faculties of Northwestern University, University of Illinois at Chicago and Lake Forest Graduate School of Management. Professor Powers has taught beginning accounting at every level, from large lecture halls of 250 students to small classes of graduate students. She incorporates a variety of instructional strategies designed to broaden students' skills and experiences in critical thinking, group interaction, and communication. Consistently, she receives the highest ratings from students. She also brings practical experience as to how managers in all levels of business use and evaluate financial information. She has co-authored several interactive computer based training CD's on accounting and finance. Susan V. Crosson is the Accounting Program Coordinator and a Professor of Accounting at Santa Fe Community College, Gainesville, FL. Susan has also enjoyed teaching at the University of Florida; Washington University in St. Louis; University of Oklahoma; Johnson County Community College in Kansas; and Kansas City Kansas Community College. She is known for her innovative application of pedagogical strategies online and in the classroom. She is a recipient of the Outstanding Educator Award from the American Accounting Association's Two Year College Section, an Institute of Management Accountants' Faculty Development Grant to blend technology into the classroom, the Florida Association of Community Colleges Professor of the Year Award for Instructional Excellence, and the University of Oklahoma's Halliburton Education Award for Excellence.Susan is active in many academic and professional organizations. She serves on the American Institute of CPA Pre-certification Education Executive Committee and is on the Florida Institute of CPAs Accounting Careers and Education committee and the Florida Association of Accounting Educators Steering Committee. She has served as the American Accounting Association's Vice President for Sections and Regions and as a Council Member-at-large, Chairperson of the Membership Committee, and was Chairperson of the Two-Year Accounting Section. Previously she served as Chairperson of the Florida Institute of CPAs Accounting Careers and Education Committee and was Chair of the Florida Institute of CPAs Relations with Accounting Educators Committee.
