Overview

The 2000 election season was expected to have historical significance long before the presidential election was contested in Florida. Partisan and ideological control of government was at stake, not only in the White House but also in the House and Senate. Furthermore, the outcomes of key state legislative and gubernatorial races would have a marked impact on upcoming reapportionment and redistricting, which could translate into long-term political leverage. Individuals and groups who invest in politics understood this dynamic and gave money in extraordinary amounts. In this book, leading political science and legal scholars analyze this historical election season and consider its impact on the ongoing debate over campaign finance reform. The volume is the latest in a quadrennial series on campaign finance from the nonpartisan Citizens' Research Foundation (CRF), along with the Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy at Brigham Young University.

Booknews

A series of 10 papers, presented by Magleby (Center for the Study of Elections and Democracy, Brigham Young U.), explore the money issues behind the American political campaigns of 2000. Patterns of campaign spending, strategies of funding campaigns, patterns of change across different political organizations, and other broad issues are discussed in early chapters, while later contributions delve into the particulars of the financing of the presidential nominations, the general presidential election, the spending of interest groups, and congressional campaigns. The material focuses on the Republicans and the Democrats, although there is some very brief discussion of the campaigns of Pat Buchanan, Ralph Nader, and other third party candidates. Annotation c.
