School Library Journal

ea. vol: 32p. diags. illus. photogs. glossary. index. (Picture Library Series). CIP. Watts. 1987. PLB $9.90. Gr 3-6 Six attractive additions to the series. The color photographs on the covers will attract readers who are interested in machines. The text in each book is simple, but not overly so. The basic format presents one piece of equipment on each two-page spread. Terms and vocabulary are appropriate for the various topics. The color photos are excellent. Many of the captions contain as much information as the text. All of the books have a working diagram of one piece of equipment. Each volume ends with a two-page history, one page of facts and records, a glossary, and an index. Because of the British origin, however, there is a problem in Farm Machinery . Almost none of the tractors shown in the photos are likely to be seen in this country. The implements have license plates, and a photo of a wheat field is labeled as corn. These differences, however, do not detract from the appeal of the book. Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, Kans.
