Overview
We could see the fire climbing the mountain. It was topping out toward us. Lickety-split it spread through the rusty, dry crowns of a diseased stand of trees. That's when we heard the airplane. Julie and I waved towels in the air. But the wind kept the smoke swirling around us. How could the pilot ever see us? The valley below and to our left was in flames. Black and creamy smoke boiled up toward us. There was no way the plane could land. It circled us once and flew away.Book Details
