Children's Literature - Meredith E. Kiger

This book is filled with some wonderful facts and observations, but the layout is all-wrong. If it was designed for preschool children it is much too wordy and long. If it was designed for primary children, it is too cartoonish for such a serious subject as fire prevention. On the one hand it wants to entertain and on the other , inform, but the result seems unsatisfactory. There's just too much to digest here! 1996 (orig.

K-Gr 3The different functions that firefighters, both volunteer and paid, perform are highlighted in this picture book. Old-time stations are compared to new ones; changes that have occurred over the years are explained. Various facts are cleverly set apart from the main text. One paragraph is devoted to the first woman firefighter. Childlike, full-color drawings show accurate details of the fire houses and trucks. Aside from a few women, the majority of the illustrations depict white males. Tips on how fires can be prevented are presented on the last three pages. The information is useful for units on fire fighting and suited to younger children, who will enjoy looking at the busy pictures.Sandra Welzenbach, H.K. Williams Elementary School, San Antonio, TX
