Reviewer: Whitney Lynne Cowman, BA(University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine)Description: This is an update of a review, last published in 2010, of high-yield and frequently tested facts in the areas of behavioral science, epidemiology, biochemistry, embryology, microbiology, immunology, pathology, pharmacology, and each respective organ system. Organized in an outline format, the book also uses tables, diagrams, mnemonics, flowcharts, and algorithms and includes preparatory guidance for the USMLE Step 1 exam.
Purpose: It is intended as a useful and up-to-date preparation guide for the USMLE Step 1 and functions as a source of high-yield information; it does not claim to be a comprehensive review book. The thousands of medical students who take the USMLE Step 1 each year are in need of effective exam preparation guides such as this.
Audience: The audience is U.S. medical students and international medical graduates.
Features: This book is especially effective in presenting a lot of information and many facts in a relatively limited space. The authors use a nice variety of methods to present material, such as diagrams, flow charts, and tables. It is particularly good at including mnemonics to aid in recall of facts. It also includes high-quality color images and a rapid review section to stimulate readers' memories and help them recall disease processes and associated signs, symptoms, etc.
Assessment: This is an extremely useful review tool for medical students studying and preparing for the USMLE Step 1 examination. It uses a variety of methods for presenting the material, which will likely appeal to a wide audience of learners. According to the authors, this edition updates facts, illustrations, diagrams, and tables.
