The layout design, color and illustrations of this book are exceptional. The text is organized skillfully to meet the images and carry the content forward. In every way, this book delivers for the young reader. Whether one knows a little about animals or a lot, the encyclopedia will stimulate reading interest. Five sections deal with mammals, birds, reptiles, creepy-crawlies and water life. Although creepy-crawlies may not appear to be the best word choice, it does encompass insects and more. The chapters are double-page spreads within each of the five sections. Within each chapter, both broad topics and specific information are presented. For instance, the chapter on baby mammals presents five subtopics--giraffe calf, large litters, learning what to do, long childhood and pouch home. All pages include small print text next to images to further explain the topic. These are more than captions. In all instances, the text and the images have a fluid unity. It is commendable that coral reefs are included in the water life section. An index of animal names ends the book.
