O'Connor is generally regarded as one of America's great 20th-century writers and perhaps the only one mentioned in the same breath as Aeschylus. She was an ardent Catholic in the Protestant South, and the Gothic grotesques of her novels and stories always revealed a moral message that was not always welcome to the many non-Catholics and non-Christians who championed her work. This collection highlights her belief as illustrated in her writing-not only in her fiction, as in the complete short story "Revelation," included here, but also in her frequently tart letters and essays. While much of this material is available in other collections, it is salutary to bring together her explicitly religious thought, to force the attention on the spiritual substructure of her strange fictional world.
