The Barnes & Noble Review
Many Flash users have never programmed before. Many of those who have programmed don't relish the idea of learning yet another language. Still, you can do so much with ActionScript, the temptation is overwhelming -- especially with Flash ActionScript: Your Visual Blueprint available to make it so darned easy.

When it comes to teaching programming languages, it's really quite amazing how well this series' visual format works. Denise Etheridge begins by organizing the language into more than 130 essential tasks. Most of them are explained in just two pages apiece: a few paragraphs of simple explanation, an "Extra" box that takes you a little deeper if you're interested, and a series of carefully annotated screen shots that walk you through the task, one step at a time.

Using this visual approach, she introduces the ActionScript programming environment; explains the syntax that ActionScript shares with other programming languages (if-else statements, math, strings); and illuminates the tasks that are unique to Flash (from creating symbols and preloaders to communicating between timelines and publishing movies). Just follow the steps and you will get to your destination. (Bill Camarda)
