Overview
Fluids, electrolytes, and acid-based imbalances are complex and usually difficult to understand -- not anymore! The self-paced, programmed instruction format of this colorful sixth edition allows participants to work through the principles and concepts of each subject at their own pace. Participants can pass through the book independently prior to a course, or review chapters as they relate to specific clinical situations.
This edition includes 25 chapters related to changes in fluids, electrolyte, and acid-base imbalances that influence the client's health status. Three of the chapters specifically target intravenous therapy in the areas of IV osmolality, total parenteral nutrition (TPN), and IV administration. Eight of the chapters present selected clinical situations that focus on fluid and elctrolyte assessments, diagnosis, interventions, and evaluation outcomes. Issues related to infants, children, and the aged adult are addressed throughout the book, as well as in the clinicl application chapters. These chapters explore clients across the life span experiencing selected health problems related to trauma and shock, gastrointestinal surgery, renal failure, oncology, and chronic diseases such as heart failure, diabetic ketoacidosis, cirrhosis of the liver, and COPD.
