Overview

One English as a second language student writes about not understanding a fast-food worker's meaning in "for here or to go?" while another writes about her disillusionment with America on her first visit. For Here or To Go? is a collection of engaging stories written in first person and adapted from ideas expressed in short compositions and personal essays of ESL learners from a variety of cultures, languages, and backgrounds.
This beginning- to intermediate-level text contains authentic and mature stories written in simple prose, well within the grasp of early ESL learners and ideal for the adult student. All represent real experiences about learning a new language in a new country and have been proven to generate interest, reflection, and debate in class among learners in a variety of educational settings, even self-study.
For Here or To Go? provides active models of native fluency to demonstrate vocabulary, mechanics, and rhetorical patterns of the English language. Stories are arranged according to the book's three themes--Shocking Culture, First Words, and Understanding a New People. Each chapter in For Here or To Go? concentrates on one story and is supported by pre- and postreading activities.
