Children's Literature

Readers receive an overview of what energy is and where it comes from in this informative book that focuses on the three main fossil fuels used by humans today: coal, oil, and natural gas. Each section describes where its fossil fuel is found, how it is mined, what it is used for in the modern world, and the effects of its use on the environment. Color pictures on every page reinforce the text's messages and bring the world of these fossil fuels to life for the reader. A section containing tips for conserving energy engages the reader in at-home conservation efforts. Like all books in the "Energy Choices" series, this book contains a detailed table of contents and a quick reference index. Terms that the reader may be unfamiliar with are emboldened in the text and then defined in the book's glossary. This book would be a great addition to libraries serving young readers interested in science and energy. It would also make a great addition to upper elementary science classrooms with a focus on or projects on various energy sources. Reviewer: Jamie Hain

Editorials

Children's Literature

The readers of this over-sized resource book is greeted by brilliantly-colored end papers and will find vivid photos, diagrams, illustrations and charts on every page. Beginning with a table of contents, readers will discover bold colored chapter titles that include information on energy from fossil fuels. Some of this information reveals the source and history of fossil fuels, early and modern fossil fuel technology, mining and drilling for fossil fuels, oil refineries, oil spills and effects of fossil fuels on our environment. Information is chunked into readable sizes and divided into sections by colorful headings. "Fact Files," brief facts in brightly colored boxes, are peppered throughout the book. One of these facts states, "The amount of oil the world uses in a year would fill a lake ten miles long and nine miles wide and sixty feet deep. This volume is one in a series titled "Future Energy" by Smart Apple Media. This is an excellent resource and should be included in any media center or classroom library. 2003, Smart Apple Media, Ages 9 to 12.
