Children's Literature

This book is a collection of four great stories dealing with life situations that can sometimes be difficult for a young child to understand. The first is about Franklin's trip to the hospital where he has an operation. The story takes the reader through the entire process explaining what and why certain things are done. The second talks about the arrival of a new baby that his mother will have in the spring. Franklin is so excited and spends each day thinking of adventures he and the new baby will have together. In the next story about Franklin and Harriet, he soon learns that being a big brother is not all what he thought it would be. Having to watch her every minute and sharing his beloved stuffed animal are not what he had in mind as fun. The final story is one of kindness when Franklin searches for the perfect Mother's Day gift. Bourgeois manages to anticipate the questions a child may have about the topics covered and answers them with insight, humor, and warmth. The illustrations add so much enjoyment and the expressions on Franklin's face just make you smile. This book is truly a treasure and one that all families of small children should own. 2003, Kids Can Press,
