Synopsis
The bestselling author of CLOCKERS tells his most compelling and emotionally charged story yet- an injured woman claims that a carjacker has kidnapper her son, but a shrewd police officer and an ambitious young reporter smell a hoax - could the woman have murdered her own child? A white woman, her hands gashed and bloody, stumbles into an inner-city emergency room with a horrifying story- she has just been carjacked by a black man who was apparently unaware that her young son was sleeping in the back seat. A frantic search for Brenda Martin's son ensues, the media swarms, and the city's not-so-latent racial tensions threaten to explode. Lorenzo Council, the black detective assigned to the case, begins to suspect that Brenda is holding back a terrible truth. Could her story be a fabrication? Is she somehow responsible for the disappearance of her child? A young female reporter, Jesse Haus, also smells a cover-up and decides to befriend the distraught mother, thus entangling herself in Brenda's fragile world even as she tries to get the biggest story of her career. Set on the same turf as CLOCKERS, this is a blazing, brilliant, hugely compelling novel about the dark truths behind the different faces we all show to the world.Book Details
