Synopsis

DEEPER sent Will and Chester into FREEFALL— tumbling through the subterranean Pore with the evil Rebecca twins in hot pursuit, both toting phials of the lethal Dominion virus. When, where, will they ever land?! Just when the drop seems infinite, the boys hit bottom, and find themselves in a realm of near-zero gravity atop a giant spongy fungus stuffed with artifacts from some lost golden age. But they are not alone. And above ground, black-clad Styx are sprouting like poison mushrooms, dead-set on spreading their plague!

Children's Literature

In Book 3 of the bestselling "Tunnels" series, Will and his friends find themselves pushed into the Pore as they desperately look for a way back Topsoil. The only problem, however, is that only one person has ever accomplished it before. Will, Chester, and an unconscious Elliot must battle the native creatures of the Pore, including giant spiders, and deal with the ever-present Rebecca twins and the tunnels themselves. With each turn seeming more desolate than the one before and Elliot's health declining daily, the boys are feeling hopeless when they stumble upon Martha, a mysterious old lady who dwells in the pore and is a series newcomer. The intricate adventure continues, and characters from previous books continue to pop up when the reader least expects them in this popular phenomena created by Gordon and Williams. Readers will again find themselves caught up in the never-ending adventure that has become Will's life. His optimism, no matter what is thrown at him, propels his story forward and will keep readers on the edge of their seats. Readers just stumbling upon this book should definitely start at the beginning, as the adventure is too far along to enter into in this third installment. Fans should look out for the upcoming movie version of Tunnels, although it will be difficult to capture the intricate details of the story itself. Reviewer: Jeanna Sciarrotta
