Overview

The Caldecott Honor Book is now available in a bilingual edition to delight Spanish and English readers.

In powerful words and vibrant illustrations, Donald Crews evokes the essence of inexorably rolling wheels, so that even a child not lucky enough to have counted freight cars will feel he has watched a freight train passing.

A book truly for the youngest child — and for every one of us who has been that child.

Brief text and illustrations trace the journey of a colorful train as it goes through tunnels, by cities, and over trestles.

Children's Literature - Susie Wilde

New in board book format, Donald Crews' Freight Train tracks a brightly colored train across trestles and through tunnels until it's "going, going...gone". The book's pages hold a certain rhythm and drama, and you can further engage your baby by add the chug-a-chug-a of a moving train as you turn the pages. This is a book with longevity Toddlers will enjoy color naming and preschoolers can view the colors mix due to the train's movements. Now the sturdy cardboard pages will help the book last.

Children's Literature - Marisa Binder

A train track sits empty, waiting for a train to pass over it. Suddenly, the pages fill with eye-popping illustrations of all the various types of train cars, each with different heights and shapes. A full page illustration demonstrates how all these pieces fit together to form a freight train, and a rainbow of color explodes onto the pages as this particular freight train moves forward on its journey. After following the fast moving train through cities, tunnels, and over bridges, the story returns to its beginning with the train track lying empty once the freight train has gone. Nothing is lost in the Spanish translation of this Caldecott Honor book, and the placement of the Spanish words directly under the English words allows children visually to associate the two languages. Beautifully illustrated with clear, interesting pictures helpful in learning colors, this bilingual book is an excellent tool for teaching. All aboard! Reviewer: Marisa Binder

School Library Journal

PreS-Gr 2-This simple but stylish Spanish translation of Crews's 1979 Caldecott Honor Book retains its freshness and child appeal. A multicolored freight train comes down the track. Each car is named from the back forward, with its appropriate color: red caboose, orange tank car, yellow hopper car, etc., until the black engine is reached. The train moves faster, through cities, tunnels, night and day, faster and faster until it is gone. The clear, graphic art illustrations convey utility and, as the train goes faster and the illustrations blur, the very essence of speed. As strong in the bilingual edition as it is in its English-only original, this is ideal for introducing trains, colors, and the concept of fast and slow to preschool and early elementary students, and perfect for ELL programs.
