Rose loves Dimitri, Dimitri might love Tasha, and Mason would die to be with Rose…

A massive Strigoi attack has put the school on high alert, and now the Academy’s crawling with Guardians—including Rose’s hard-hitting mother, Janine Hathaway. And if handto- hand combat with her mom wasn’t bad enough, Rose’s tutor Dimitri has his eye on someone else, her friend Mason’s got a huge crush on her, and Rose keeps getting stuck in Lissa’s head while she’s making out with her boyfriend, Christian! The Strigoi are closing in, and the Academy’s not taking any risks.... This year, St. Vlad’s annual holiday ski trip is mandatory.

But the glittering winter landscape and the posh Idaho resort only create the illusion of safety. When three friends run away in an offensive move against the deadly Strigoi, Rose must join forces with Christian to rescue them. But heroism rarely comes without a price…

Children's Literature - Toni Jourdan

Rose Hathaway is a dhampir, which means she is half human and half vampire. Because of her bloodlines she is the perfect guardian for her best friend, Lissa, who is a Moroi. The Moroi are a type of vampire that are good and have the ability to harness the magic derived from the four elements. One glitch, Rose and Lissa are so close that Rose can feel all of Lissa's emotions, which works out great when Lissa is in trouble, but is awkward when she is making out with her boyfriend, Christian. The Strigoi are bad to the bone, killing machine vampires who are on the attack, forcing the students of St. Vladimir's to spend winter break on a mandatory ski trip in snow covered Idaho. Even the distance cannot keep them safe and Rose, Mason (with his mad crush on Rose), and Eddie are forced to fight for their lives and the lives of their Moroi friends. On top of that, Rose's hard edged mom, Janine, is there to "share her combat experience" with the guardians. Unfortunately, this mother/daughter sparring match ends in a shiner for Rose. There is nothing worse than having your mom barge into your Strigoi battle. On top of that, Rose's crush on Dmitri is going nowhere and Mason's attention is more than Rose can handle. A graphically re-imagined edition of the second book in the "Vampire Academy" series. Illustrator Emma Vieceli is amazing. Talk about some gorgeous characters playing out the romance and drama. I have never read the actual novel so part of the quick moving prologue left me wanting to know more and wondering if I'm missing something. Overall, I enjoyed the quick page turner and dark colors of Rose's world. Reviewer: Toni Jourdan
