Overview

Discover and explore worlds containing unexpected life.

As some scientists search for life on the frozen planet of Mars, others are discovering life in unexpected places here on Earth.

Frozen Oceans follows the expeditions of polar scientists in the Arctic and Antarctic as they investigate the life found in and around the ice caps, which cover up to 13 percent of the Earth's surface.

Every year during the harsh polar winter, the surface of the ocean freezes, forming a temporary ice layer called pack ice, or sea ice. The Antarctic is the site of the greatest seasonal event on Earth. In March, the air temperatures drop to as low as -40Β°F, the ocean, which turns to ice at 28.7Β°F, starts freezing at the incredible average rate of 2.22 square miles per minute!

This is the first book to explain in non-technical terms and show with color photography the abundance of life on, in and under the ice.

Topics include:

  • The nature of pack ice
  • Pack ice regions of the world
  • Life within a block of ice
  • Microbiology inside the ice
  • Mammals, birds and ice.

Scientists are continually being surprised by the abundance of life where no life was expected. For many years, ice was seen as an obstacle to exploration and a threat to life. The ice is now perceived as central to global ocean circulation as well as global climate patterns. Frozen Oceans is a must for anyone with an interest in the polar regions, marine biology and the Earth's environment.

Synopsis

Life abounds in and around the planet's ice caps and science has learned a great deal about it and the role pack ice plays in the world's ecology. This book is the first exploration of the topic for lay people and is abundantly illustrated.

Editorials

Kenai (AK) Pennisula Clarion - Shana Loshbaugh

[Thomas] has a knack for explaining... an extraordinary amount of detail and information, yet it is written so that anyone with a decent grasp of high-school science can understand it... an excellent primer for anyone interested in arctic science or a sophisticated understanding of northern environmental conditions.

Science News

Explains how the study of pack ice is improving our understanding not only of early Earth but also of the environments of Mars and the moons of Jupiter... Hundreds of color pictures enliven the text.

Choice

Well written and nontechnical and contains an excellent array of color photographs and diagrams.

Oceanography

A glossy, well-produced book... straightforward and concise... well researched and accurate.

Dallas Morning News

[Polar scientists] explore the world of pack ice in non-technical terms, illustrating with color photography.

Arctic Magazine

I strongly recommend Frozen Oceans for experts and non-experts alike. The first of its kind Frozen Oceans is exceptionally good value. David Thomas is to be congratulated for reducing a complex subject, more or less successfully, to a readable and informative description of the pack ice, and for sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with a wider audience.
