With chapters logically arranged by system, Functional Anatomy and Physiology of Domestic Animals offers students in pre-veterinary or veterinary technology programs an excellent introduction to body systems for future study and practice and acts as a quick review of the basics for more advanced courses in physiology or in a clinical setting.

The fourth edition maintains its expanded coverage of avian topics, including additional information on the kidney, respiration, digestion, and male and female reproduction systems, and a greater depth of information on body water and electrolytes, to facilitate comprehension of capillary dynamics, renal dynamics, and fluid replacement therapy. More than 350 illustrations, including many new and revised to this edition, reinforce the concepts covered in the text. To aid in student learning, the book incorporates many tools such as chapter outlines, study aid questions, self-evaluation exercises, clinical correlates, bolded key terms, and suggested reading, with two-color text for improved ease of use.

The purpose is to present an introductory, comparative, physiologic survey not covered in most human-based physiology texts. This edition has met the author's objectives through an organized, well-illustrated presentation of the fundamentals of physiology. The targeted audiences, stated by the author in the book's preface, are undergraduate students in preveterinary, veterinary technology, animal science, and animal ecology majors. The book is also touted by the author as a secondary reference to more detailed texts tailored for veterinary students. This book will be most adequate for preveterinary and animal science undergraduates. Dr. Reece's expertise is reflected through strong academic credentials, previous text publication, and in-depth, organized coverage of multiple topics. The extent and quality of illustrations are strong assets of this textbook. Description: This third edition of this animal anatomy and physiology book has been considerably modified from the format of the second edition, published in 1997. As the expanded title indicates, this edition contains a considerable amount of information on functional anatomy in addition to physiology. Each chapter is organized in a highly didactic manner. Chapters begin with an outline highlighting the major topics, include question lists that target important information in each section and end with a series of self-evaluation questions.
Purpose: The book is designed to provide a basic understanding of anatomy and physiology of domestic animals. It provides an excellent introduction to the organization and functions of the major organ systems. The book also has a broader relevance to mammalian and avian biology, since many of the areas addressed are pertinent to most mammalian and avian species.
Audience: This is intended to be a basic, introductory text for undergraduate level students, principally preveterinary students, veterinary technicians, and animal science students.
Features: All the major organ systems are covered. Where appropriate, (as with sensory organs, skeletal elements and the digestive tract), considerable information is provided on comparative anatomy to emphasize the differences and similarities between the domestic species. This latest edition has increased coverage of avian systems, particularly in areas where avian biology differs markedly from that of mammals. The book begins with a chapter coveringthe basics of molecular and cell biology and embryology. This chapter serves as a valuable introduction to these related fields and serves to place these specialized areas in context with the more conventional organ and tissue-based discussions of anatomy and physiology. The book is comprehensively illustrated, predominantly with line drawings that complement the anatomical aspects of the text. Of particular interest to aspiring veterinary students, the author provides several observations in each chapter that emphasize the clinical relevance of specific anatomical or physiological information. Accepting that this is an introductory text, the suggested reading lists accompanying each chapter are somewhat limited, largely comprising other standard texts.
Assessment: This latest edition provides a number of valuable innovations not present in earlier editions and should prove to be a very useful reference for students entering the fields of mammalian and avian anatomy and physiology.
