Gr 9 Up-This well-documented work accomplishes what it sets out to do: to be a "first-stop research source." In his introduction, Long spells out the difference between fundamentalism and extremism. The author then traces the history of both subjects, followed by a chronology of key events. An overview of key court cases and paragraph-length entries on important figures are also included. The next section provides hints on how and where to look for more information, a lengthy annotated bibliography, and lists of organizations and agencies. Part three excerpts from the transcripts of three court cases: the Scopes trial, Brown v. Board of Education, and Roe v. Wade. This overview will answer a number of questions. However, students seeking in-depth information will have to follow through on some of Long's suggestions for further reading.-Elizabeth M.
