Anita Barnes Lowen - Children's Literature
All of his life, Cory has been so proud of having a real live Indian foster uncle. And now, with Cory's Dad assigned to duty in Vietnam, Uncle Jasper has invited Cory to spend the summer on his Idaho ranch. It is a dream come true. But Cory soon discovers that the reality of ranch life is more nightmare than dream. He has never lived out in an open place with just miles and miles of wild things and he " . . . had found out something about himself . . . he was afraid, not only of the horse . . . but of the country." Then his encounter with Black Elk, a Nez Perce medicine man, plunges Cory into an alternative world where animals live in tribes and are the rulers of the world. Transformed into the beaver, Yellow Shell, Cory is desperate to return to his own body and his own world. But to do so he must overcome his fears and as Yellow Shell and help defeat the Changer. Although events move slowly in the beginning, readers will ultimately find themselves caught up in the war between the People and animals whose intelligence equals that of humans. 2006 (orig. 1965), Starscape Book/Tom Doherty Associates, Ages 9 to 12.
