The aim here is to provide an introduction to one class of systems used for signal transduction at the cell surface. The defining feature of these systems is the utilization of a heterotrimmeric GTP-binding protein (G protein) to mediate the transfer of information across the plasma membrane, from receptor to effector. It has become apparent that G proteins play a central role in the transduction process and that the basic format used for transduction in the hormone-stimulated adenylyl cyclase system is widely employed by the cell in other hormone-sensitive systems.
