From The Critics

Reviewer: Francis H. Straus II, MD, MS(University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine)
Description: This general pathobiology text is limited to general principles of pathology or basic mechanisms of disease, with chapters covering topics such as general cell injury, aging, inflammation, thrombosis, immunity, and neoplastic response. The author emphasizes that general cell injury covers principles of physical, chemical, infection, immune, or genetic causes of cell injury. Other chapters place emphasis on anoxic necrosis, immune response, and neoplastic response.
Purpose: The author's intention is to simplify and cross-correlate the multiple mechanisms of disease pathogenesis, soemthing that does not happen in a multiauthored text. The more the reader can understand the whys and hows of disease development, the easier it is to remember the numerous facts associated with the process. This book is written for a specialized niche in which there are few current texts. I believe it is a needed contribution and succeeds in meeting these special objectives.
Audience: This book is not for beginning medical students, but is specifically written for biology graduate students and biology researchers who could benefit from a clear understanding of the mechanisms of disease development (pathogenesis) as they plan, execute, and report on experiments that lead to deranged morphology and function (disease). The author is a very credible authority on atherosclerosis and cardiovascular pathology.
Features: This book contains only 127 illustrations, most of which are line drawings, with some black-and-white photomicrographs and electron micrographs. At the end of each chapter are extensive categorized references that are quite current. The index contains 2090 entries that certainly help in finding specific subjects in the text. This light, large book has an attractive soft cover.
Assessment: This is the first edition of a specialized text aimed at the research-oriented pathology student. It is a very worthwhile contribution to this niche, offering a strong presentation of the pathogenesis of major disease categories with the basic science background to fully understand the abnormal biologic progression. Perhaps medical students should learn this kind of pathology as well.
