Description:This atlas is more than just a group of photos of genital dermatoses; it also encompasses this whole area of dermatology with well worded descriptions, diagnoses, and treatments.
Purpose:Genital skin diseases are often difficult to diagnose and are under-taught by the medical community. This book attempts to present the subject in a clear, complete, and straightforward manner. There are some books that focus on genital skin disease and genital manifestations of skin diseases, but few are well written, complete, or easily referenced. This book, therefore, fills a much needed vacuum in the field of dermatology.
Audience:The atlas is written from a dermatologic perspective, but for any health practitioner faced with these issues in their patients. Libby Edwards is, if not the foremost dermatologist in this field, among the most respected. In addition, her clear, straightforward style in diagnosing and dealing with these diseases permeates the book, making it a useful reference.
Features:The book first discusses normal variants of genitalia. This in itself is very useful as, for example, I have never seen a photo or a description of vulvar papillae in women, and yet have wondered about this in some of my patients. And the author presents these in detail. The book is divided into chapters based on morphology or issue for easy reference. Chapters are complete, easy to read, and full of helpful information. The photos are incredible. It is generally very difficult to amass a good collection of genital dermatoses in photos, but this book has one.
Assessment:This is the best book I've seen addressing this subject. It is clear, concise, complete, with great photos and easy to read and understand descriptions. It discusses not only differential diagnoses, but also pathology, diagnosis and treatment of each disease entity so that no other resource is needed. I would recommend it without reservation to those in the field as a great and useful addition to their library.
