Advancing age is associated with a number of neurological conditions, including dementia, cerebrovascular disease, and traumatic brain injury. In addition, chronic medical conditions (e.g. diabetes), emotional disturbance, and medications may compromise the neuropsychological functioning of older adults. Geriatric neuropsychology is a growing specialty, with neuropsychologists ideally suited to diagnose and treat many of the cognitive disorders experienced by the elderly.
